What is the cost of an online MPH degree?

The cost of studying for an online MPH degree can vary from as little as $7,000 to as much as $80,000 depending on the institution, and whether it is considered in-state or out-of-state tuition. However, a student can complete a good, reputable online MPH for around $25,000 or less, depending how many credits are required to complete the degree. In most cases, credits needed vary from 42 to 60, which can make a big difference on the overall price of the program.

As an example of how much fees vary, New Mexico State University and the University of Illinois, Springfield’s online MPH degrees require about 48 hours of coursework and cost around $7,250 and $8,250 respectively.

Liberty University requires 42 credit hours for its MPH, and it charges $540 each, totally $22,680.

At the upper end of the scale, Johns Hopkins charges $923 per credit unit for the online MPH program offered at its Bloomberg School of Public Health, and 80 credits are required. So students will be paying $73,840 for the program and more for books.

The online MPH offered by the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California is probably the most expensive, with tuition costing $1,666 per credit hour. The estimated total cost of tuition is $78,302 plus $750 to $1,500 for books and supplies, and an $85 application fee: close to $80,000.

When considering the cost of an online MPH, it is essential to take all factors into account, including the concentrations that are offered, and whether it’s an accredited school by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).

Also, some schools will help graduates find worthwhile employment once they have completed the MPH. While the area of public health a student decides to specialize in will determine, to a large extent what they can earn, so too will the standards set by the public health school.

The better the reputation of their programs, the more graduates are likely to earn. So it might be worthwhile spending a little more to get a degree that comes with recommendations.

Students must also find out exactly what is covered by the fees. Of course, students will not have to worry about food or housing costs unless there is a specified on-site visit to the university or school offering the program. The same applies to transportation costs, which can also add up quickly. However, students must factor in excluded costs in the program, such as books and other supplies that are specified for the course. Typically the cost of books can range from $1,000 to $3,000 for a two-year program.
