George Washington University Online MPH
Milken Institute School of Public Health

The Milken Institute School of Public Health currently offers a number of online degrees, including a Master of Public Health (MPH): MPH@GW. A combination of local, national, and global healthcare, as well as public health practices is emphasized in the program that also offers interdisciplinary teaching. The curriculum has been designed to build core competencies and skills as well as varied familiarity with important areas of public health . Those highlighted are public health biology, health communication, professionalism, leadership, cultural competency, biostatistics and epidemiology, systems thinking, and planning, implementation and evaluation methods.

The MPH@GW program comprises core public health courses, program-specific courses, and a number of electives. There is also a short practicum and what they term a “culminating experience” where candidates are expected to apply the theory they have been taught in a real-world situation.

The core courses focus on building an understanding of the essential public health principles including the biologic basis of disease in public health, and management & policy approaches. Environmental and occupational health in a sustainable world, social and behavioral approaches to health, the principles and practice of epidemiology, and biostatistical applications for public health are also studied.

In addition to the core courses, students can choose from five focus areas for the MPH@GW: Environmental and Occupational Health (EOH), Health Communication, Health Policy, Program Planning and Evaluation, and Global Health. Students are also not required to declare a focus area.

Depending on the chosen focus area, there are seven program-specific courses in the MPH@GW that focus on different public health subjects. These look at global health program evaluation, comparative global health systems, planning and implementation of health promotion programs, community organization, development and advocacy, data management, and analysis. There is also an introduction to the US Health Services delivery and an introduction to public health communication and marketing.

MPH@GW students are able to complete the degree part-time or full-time, in which case it is possible to do it in 12 months.
