Are there scholarships for online Masters of Public Health?

Yes, there are scholarships for students wanting to study for a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree online, but not many. There are also a few grants available for study.

Scholarships available for online MPH study include:

  • Many merit-based scholarships are available at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health for anyone in the MPH program. While most scholarships are available to full-time students, there is a Dean’s Scholarship that is available to MPH students who are studying online. Open to The US as well as international students, it is worth $2,500 a year for up to three years.
  • The Mitch Greenlick Public Health Scholarship is open to US citizens enrolled in epidemiology and biostatistics at the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine’s MPH program. The scholarship offers partial funding – applications close on February 1 each year.
  • The Foundation for Sustainable Development San Francisco, California offers the Katie Evans Memorial Scholarship which covers a nine-week internship for MPH graduates and students who have enrolled in an MPH program. These internships are offered in Asia, Latin America, and Africa.

Students can also discover the availability of scholarships and grants by inquiring at the school where they plan to study, or the institutions where they are applying. Alternatively students can apply to the US Department of Education (DOE) for information, or to the US Public Health Service that sometimes offers federal grants to students of epidemiology, environmental health sciences, and biostatistics.

In general, federal DOE student assistance programs are authorized under the Higher Education Acts Title IV. These programs include federal work-study as well as loans and a small percentage of grants.

There are some types of loans, including subsidized loans that are available largely according to financial needs. Additionally there are unsubsidized loans (which must be paid back in full together with interest) that do not take financial needs into account.

Grants, like scholarships, do not have to be repaid, and the Department of Education offers four different types though these are not tailored to MPH study.
