Students can also discover the availability of scholarships and grants by inquiring at the school where they plan to study, or the institutions where they are applying. Alternatively students can apply to the US Department of Education (DOE) for information, or to the US Public Health Service that sometimes offers federal grants to students of epidemiology, environmental health sciences, and biostatistics.

There are some types of loans, including subsidized loans that are available largely according to financial needs. Additionally there are unsubsidized loans (which must be paid back in full together with interest) that do not take financial needs into account.
