The UNE MPH degree program is fully online and it accommodates both full-time and part-time students of all ages, and does not require a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test score for admission. It is the only public health program in Maine that is accredited by the Council on Education in Public Health (CEPH).

The UNE is also accredited by the oldest US regional accrediting association: the New England Association of School and Colleges Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (NEASC CIHE).

The UNE MPH curriculum has been prepared to enable graduates to do everything possible to prevent both injury and disease, and to work towards promoting the health of communities and individuals. Health areas studied are comprehensive and include analysis, communication, ethics, epidemiology, financial management, global health, law, leadership, program development and program planning, and public health policy.

The UNE MPH degree program involves online lectures with discussions and assessments, as well as required reading, writing of papers, and completion of various projects.

Even though there are no on-campus studies, the public health practitioners, educators and researchers who make up the UNE MPH faculty facilitate and encourage online group discussions and communication via email. In this way students are given the opportunity to get to know one another, and they are able to share ideas, problems, and solutions.

A total of 46 credit hours are required for the UNE MPH degree, and it usually takes 18 months for students to complete the degree. There are five core courses plus another four courses students are required to complete, as well as seven electives from a list of 17 possibilities. A relatively short public health practicum is also required.
