New Mexico State University (NMSU) is one of relatively few US universities that has an accredited Master of Public Health (MPH) program that is offered in a completely online format. This course complements, and is the same as, the university’s traditional MPH that is available on the Las Cruces main campus of the university. It caters specifically for those who are working full-time or unable, for other reasons, to attend on-campus classes.
The MPH program is offered by NMSU’s College of Health and Social Services’ Department of Public Health Sciences, and it focuses on Community Health Education and Health Management, Administration and Policy. The program was developed to prepare those now working in the field and those wanting to enter public health professions to function in various settings. These include health programs operated by local, state, and federal governments. They also include profit and non-profit agencies and organizations, educational institutions, and relevant work site settings. The program has been fully accredited by the national Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).
The MPH program comprises five public health core courses as well as a total of 12 courses that emphasize both Community Health and Health Management, Administration and Policy. There is also a single cultural foundation course that must be completed, as well as a field experience requirement. The core courses count for 15 credits, the specializations count for a total of 36, and the cultural foundation course and field experience are three credits each.
Specified admissions requirements include approval of graduate record examinations (GRE) verbal and quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing tests scores. Applicants must also supply at least two references from employers or from a previous faculty member. The university also requires a short biography and a written statement that describes reasons for the applicant wishing to complete the NMSU MPH degree. Any volunteer or paid work that has been completed in public health or related agency settings should be included in this description.
