The Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee offers an online Master of Public Health (MPH) program through its Institute for Health and Society. With a mission to advance the health of the public in general, the Medical College of Wisconsin MPH program offers opportunities for a range of students wanting to further their education in the field of public health.
All courses that form the Medical College of Wisconsin MPH program are offered in a convenient distance-learning format that does not require students to visit the campus. The degree is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) and is well-established and respected, created decades ago, in 1986.
There are a total of 42 credits required for the Medical College of Wisconsin MPH program, with a combination of core courses, required community health courses, as well as an ethics course, several elective courses (usually three), and three final required “culminating experiences.”
The five core courses give students a good, basic grounding in public health. These are Environmental Health; Public Health Administration; Introduction to Biostatistics; Principles of Epidemiology; and Behavioral Science and Public Health. The community health courses cover health assessment and improvement, program planning, and program evaluation. The required ethics course is titled, Balancing Harms and Individual and Community Interests: Ethical Issues in Public Health. The culminating experiences comprise field placement preparation, followed by field placement, and finally followed by a Capstone project.
Students registering for the Medical College of Wisconsin MPH program are able to complete it within two to five years, usually depending on whether they continue with employment during their study. The College warns that the structure of their online learning education is very different to traditional lecture-style formats, and provides a detailed list of considerations for students to consider before registering for this option. These include technical proficiency and access to the Internet; good communication skills; both self-discipline and self motivation; patience and flexibility. While there are opportunities for students to interact with other students, independence is another characteristic for a successful Medical College of Wisconsin online MPH candidate.
