The College of Public Health at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) in Johnson City prides itself on actively collaborating with members of the community as well as professionals and leading research partners when designing their programs. This includes the ETSU online MPH degree, which has three possible areas of concentration: community health, health services administration, and epidemiology.
When studying for a MPH Community Health, students are taught how to interact with communities in a way that they can promote and educate in health-related issues. They are also trained how to do health assessments as well as public health-related program evaluations. Ultimately, they are educated to appreciate how important it is to establish collaborative community partnerships.
The MPH Health Services Administration is a multi-disciplinary degree that focuses on developing and implementing public health policy as well as organizing, financing and making health care services accessible to the community. Students are given numerous opportunities to be involved with research and community service projects and activities.
Epidemiology is a growing discipline within the public health industry and is popularly described as the “basic science of public health.” Qualified epidemiologists are essentially health professionals who investigate the causes and patterns of injury and disease. They also do what they can to reduce risks and the occurrence of both. Their focus is on research, the development of health policy, and community education. Graduates with a MPH Epidemiology have the opportunity to be employed in this relatively new and exciting field, determining which people or communities are at risk of becoming ill; why some people are more at risk than others; and taking steps to prevent the spread of disease and illness.
