Concordia University of Nebraska Online MPH

Concordia University (CU) in Nebraska offers an online Master of Public Health (MPH) curriculum that is well grounded in the Christian faith. The MPH is also designed to prepare students and teach them the skills required to improve public health policies and programs, to become successful leaders in the field of public health.

Only available online (not on-campus), the CU online MPH program offers a choice of two specializations based on the students’ professional goals. These specializations are Community Health Education and Health Policy and Administration, both of which require 12 credit hours from four courses, each worth three credit hours.

The Community Health Education MPH teaches the development, implementation and evaluation of health programs. The aim is that graduates will be able to effectively inform and educate the public about healthy behavior, nutrition, exercise, and about injury and disease prevention. There are two courses that are required: community health and programming in public health. There are also three electives – public health ethics, global health, and marketing public health – two of which must be chosen.

The Health Policy and Administration MPH takes a high-level approach that promotes public health with leadership as well as management skills. The goal is that these skills can be used to impact policy and legislation. There are four courses that are required: leadership and organizational management in health care, public health finance, human resource management in health care, and marketing public health.

In both instances, the MPH curriculum puts very strong emphasis on a good foundation in public health concepts and knowledge. Concentrations include environmental health, behavioral health, health policy and management, biostatistics, epidemiology, and research methods.

Graduates from Concordia University are assured that they will be able to effectively research public health needs as well as implement the strategies that are required to improve health. They will also be in a position to arrange for more accessible health care, education, information about health care, as well as advocate for policies and legislation supporting quality health care, particularly for under-served populations. Graduates will be able to design and run outreach programs, including developing strategies that generally encourage a greater awareness of disease prevention and related health care issues.
