Benedictine University in Lisle Illinois offers an online Master of Public Health (MPH) degree that is accredited by the international Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). It covers core public health fields and provides a practical and scientific base for those expanding their positions in the public health industry. The MPH has been designed to provide all the essential tools a graduate will need to become a leader dealing with vital public health issues, including control of infectious diseases and the ability to deal with a plethora of vital public health issues. Broadly, the Master’s degree will appeal to those wanting to help protect the health of individuals and communities, work towards improving lives by promoting a healthy lifestyle, and researching elements of injury prevention and disease.
The core areas covered in the Benedictine MPH are behavioral and social aspects of public health, biological aspects of public health, environmental health, health policy, health services management, biostatistics, and epidemiology. In addition, coursework often covers related fields including community organizing, advocacy, policy, urban planning, social work, and social sustainability. Total coursework will depend on the students’ chosen direction for their MPH degree, including electives chosen.
The Benedictine University online MPH degree itself is considered to be generalistic, so that graduates may use their knowledge and skills in employment that relates to many different population-based health issues.
To make the degree more specific, there are also four certificates that can be taken in conjunction with the MPH. Some of these subjects are also available as electives:
Health Management and Policy qualifies students for positions where they can influence policy development including laws, regulations and current practices.
Health Education and Promotion trains students how to participate in, or lead health-related activities and programs in various settings ranging from public health departments, schools, colleges and universities, to social service agencies and health maintenance organizations.
Epidemiology, an increasingly required specialty that teaches how to use biostatistical methods when analyzing and solving public health problems as well as other skills relating to survey and research principles.
Emergency Preparedness which teaches essential skills relating to crisis, risk and disaster management, and well as ways to prevent disasters.
These are also available as stand-alone certificate programs.
