Des Moines University in Iowa is a medical and health sciences school founded in 1898. It focuses on educating highly compassionate and competent health professionals from diverse groups to enable them to improve lives in a global community. Its programs include a variety of master’s degrees, including a Master of Public Health (MPH) that is accessible online or on-campus.
The primary focus of the Des Moines University MPH is to educate competent public health professionals so that they can promote wellness and help people and communities avoid a wide range of health threats. In this way graduates working in the many fields of public health are able to help protect individuals, families, larger communities, and even countries from the risks of injury, illness and disease. Students working towards an MPH are able to enhance and improve their knowledge and skills in the field of public health; additionally, they are able to advance their careers.
The Des Moines MPH curriculum has a practical approach based on solving problems combining both theory and experience. Students are able to achieve the degree in two years by completing nine credits each term. The course takes three years if only seven credits are completed each term. Ultimately there are 39 credits required for core subjects and six required for electives. The College provides a core curriculum that also suggests a course sequence of study that involves taking certain classes concurrently with certain others. At the end of the program there is a public health internship worth three credits and a public health Capstone worth two; this experiential study is undertaken independently, according to the College of Health Sciences requirements.
All applicants must supply a resume, a letter of recommendation, as well as personal statements relating to careers goals and professional and personal strengths. While graduate record examination (GRE) scores are required from all applicants, the College doesn’t set a minimum score.
